Skid steer augers are hydraulic drive attachments for digging post holes for fencing, planting, signs and footings. Compare four options with different bit sizes, included accessories and mounting details.

How to choose a skid steer auger

Start with the holes you need to dig. Bit diameter sets the hole size, so match the bits included to your fence posts, trees, signs or footings.

  • Wolverine Hydraulic Auger: includes 12" and 18" bits. It uses a universal skid steer quick-attach mount and weighs 370 lbs, with a 48" overall length.
  • Auger 3-Bit Post Hole Digger: includes 8", 12" and 16" bits and has a tilt-and-swivel head, aimed at fencing, planting and signs.
  • WIG Auger 2-Bit Post Hole Digger: includes 12" and 18" bits plus a 36" extension. It is listed for fencing, tree planting, deck footings and foundation piers.
  • Raytree Heavy Duty 3-Bit Auger Set (RMA42): includes 6", 12" and 18" bits with a maximum drilling depth of 42".

What to check before you buy

  • Hydraulic flow and pressure: the Wolverine lists a requirement of 8-20 GPM and a maximum operating pressure of 3,000 PSI. Compare that with your machine's auxiliary hydraulics. The WIG is described as compatible with most skid steers within its listed flow range.
  • Mounting: the Wolverine uses a universal quick-attach mount. The Raytree comes with its mounting plate, hoses and couplers.
  • Drive build: the Raytree mounts its hydraulic motor directly to a planetary gearbox, so it has no chains. Its bits are described as 20% heavier than comparable brands.
  • Extra reach: the WIG's 36" extension may help if you need more depth than the bit alone gives.
