Rotating hydraulic grapples for excavators, used to grip, lift and position logs, brush, rocks, scrap and demolition debris. This page lists three models, including two Lyals grapples made for CAT 307/308 excavators.
Start with your excavator
A grapple has to match your machine before anything else. Check these items first:
- Machine class and model: The ALS1638 is designed for 5–9 ton excavators. The two Lyals grapples, the ALSERG08 and ALSEG08, are listed as fitting CAT 307/308 excavators.
- Pin diameter: The ALS1638 uses 45 mm pins. The ALSEG08 uses 50 mm pins. Measure your stick pins and compare them to the listing before you order.
- Hydraulics: All three rotate, so your excavator needs an auxiliary circuit for the grapple and a rotation function. The ALS1638 lists a rotating flow of 7.9–10.5 GPM.
Comparing the three models
- ALS1638: Rotates 360° and has a maximum opening of 55"–56". It weighs approximately 1,036–1,175 lbs. It is built from high-strength steel with AR400 (or equivalent) wear parts. It is listed for logs, brush, scrap and demolition debris.
- Lyals ALSEG08: This is a heavy-duty grapple with a maximum rated grapple capacity of 1,800 lbs. It has 50 mm pins and fits CAT 307/308 excavators. It suits logs, rocks, debris and scrap.
- Lyals ALSERG08: This grapple is also listed for CAT 307/308 excavators. It has hydraulically operated jaws and a rotating upper assembly. It handles logs, brush, rocks and debris on construction, demolition and land-clearing sites. The listing doesn't give a pin size, so confirm that detail before ordering.
What to look for
- Weight matters. A heavier grapple takes away some of your excavator's lifting capacity, so compare the attachment weight to what you plan to pick up.
- Check the opening width against the size of your typical loads, such as log diameters or brush piles.
- Rotation lets you position material without repositioning the machine. It helps most when sorting debris or stacking logs.
- Look at the wear parts. Hardened wear components matter on abrasive work like demolition and scrap.
