A ripper turns an excavator into a machine that can break ground the bucket cannot. The single curved shank concentrates the full breakout force of the arm onto one point, which is what gets you through frost, hardpan, caliche, shale and old asphalt or root mass without resorting to a hammer.
This is the TOFT08ER, sized for 8-ton-class excavators such as the CAT 320. Ripping first and then dressing the loosened material with a bucket is normally faster than fighting hard ground with a bucket alone, and it is much easier on the machine.
