Mini Excavator Hydraulic Thumb: Running an Auger With One

1 min readChupp Industrial

The mini excavator hydraulic thumb we add to every machine ties into the boom's auxiliary line, so you disconnect it to run an auger.

A mini excavator hydraulic thumb is not something the factory puts on: none of the mini excavators Chupp Industrial sells come with one. We add a thumb to all of them ourselves, and the way we hook it up decides how you run an auger or any other hydraulic attachment on the boom.

How Is a Mini Excavator Hydraulic Thumb Hooked Up?

The thumb is hooked into the auxiliary hydraulic line on the boom. That is the line that sends hydraulic power out to an attachment, and on these machines it would otherwise go unused.

Do I Have to Disconnect the Hydraulic Thumb to Run an Auger?

Yes. Because the thumb uses the boom's auxiliary line, you have to disconnect the thumb first to run an auger or any other auxiliary hydraulic attachment on the boom. When you are done with the auger, you hook the thumb back up.

Does the ATS-ME18 Mini Excavator Have Auxiliary Hydraulics?

Yes. The ATS-ME18, a 1.4-ton mini excavator, has auxiliary hydraulics for running attachments such as an auger. Its thumb is set up the same way as on the rest of our mini excavators.

Can You Change Attachments on a Mini Excavator With a Thumb?

Yes. Attachments can be changed on all of our mini excavators, and we sell attachments for them as well. If the attachment you are putting on runs off the auxiliary hydraulics, unhook the thumb before you hook it up.
